Before you connect
You need a verified Orbit account and a ChatGPT account that can add custom MCP apps. Availability and administrator controls depend on your ChatGPT plan and workspace. Start with a custom connection; Orbit is not currently listed in the public app directory.
Use the public HTTPS Orbit address you sign into, followed by /mcp/orbit. You can copy this endpoint from Orbit’s Connect an agent page. Do not use a localhost URL in ChatGPT.
Add Orbit in ChatGPT
Copy this MCP server URL into your new connection:
https://orbit.duskworks.co.uk/mcp/orbit
- Open ChatGPT’s apps or connectors settings and choose the option to create a custom MCP app. Enable developer access if your workspace requires it.
- Name it Orbit and paste the MCP server URL above.
- Select OAuth authentication. Orbit publishes discovery and automatic client registration, so you do not need to create an OAuth client ID or secret manually.
- Connect and sign into Orbit when the approval page opens.
- Select the workspaces ChatGPT may access. Choose View only or View and edit, then approve.
- Return to ChatGPT and enable Orbit in the conversation when needed.
Menu labels and availability can change. Follow the current OpenAI authentication documentation for the platform’s OAuth requirements.
Check your connection
Ask ChatGPT:
Use Orbit to list the workspaces available to you and their permissions.
Ask me which workspace to use, then retrieve its workspace context.
With edit access, test creating a fictional contact, then retrieve it in a new conversation. Check the same contact in Orbit’s record browser. Reading records does not authorise contacting people or changing other systems.
Manage access
The approval creates a separate agent connection in Orbit. In Agents, open it to inspect the last accepted request, change workspace permissions or revoke access. Credentials refresh automatically; there is no token to copy. Access tokens last one hour and refresh credentials expire after 30 days. Reconnect when the client asks you to sign in again.
Each approval creates a new connection. Revoke old connections you no longer use. New workspaces are excluded unless you later change that connection’s permissions.
Troubleshooting
If no custom app option is available, check your ChatGPT account and administrator settings. If approval fails, start the connection again; approval pages expire after ten minutes and opening another approval in the same browser replaces the pending request.
If tools are missing, check the selected role and refresh the client’s tool discovery. Read-only connections do not expose write tools. If access has been revoked, add or reconnect Orbit and approve a new connection.
The OAuth implementation is covered by local integration tests. A successful live ChatGPT connection must still be verified after deployment; this guide is not a claim of directory approval or completed live acceptance.
